Chicago/Turabian Style: Two styles of Citations

Notes-Bibliography Style

Chicago/Turbian Style

Notes-Bibliography Style

  • In this style, you place a superscript number at the end of the sentence in which you quote, paraphrase, or summarize from a source
Example: Thomas Jefferson said " I feel that I should give all my books in my library to the United States Congress so that they can have the best of human knowledge to consult when tending to the affairs of government."34

  • Then you cite the source at the bottom of the page or end of the paper, using the same superscript number.
Example: 34.   Thomas Jefferson, The Works of Thomas Jefferson. Philadelphia: Touchstone Books, 1954.

  • Widely used in the humanities

Author-date style

Chicago/Turbian Style

Author-Date

  • In this style, the author's name and date of publication are the critical elements for identifying sources
  • In this style, you place the author, date and page number within the text of the paper. This is known as a parenthetical citation.
Example: Thomas Jefferson said " I feel that I should give all my books in my library to the United States Congress so that they can have the best of human knowledge to consult when tending to the affairs of government." (Jefferson, 1954, 565)

  • Then you create an alphabetical list by author of all your sources used.  This is called your reference list
Example: Jefferson, Thomas. 1954. The Works of Thomas Jefferson. Philadelphia: Touchstone Books.

  • Widely used in the social sciences
