CSE Citation Style

This guide provides basic instruction about the CSE (Council of Science Educators) Citation Style.

Citation-Name

In this system, the end references are listed alphabetically by author and then by title. Then, numbers are assigned to the end references. The in-text references are numbered according to that list.

The number of an end reference does not affect the order in which the in-text reference appears within the text. If end reference number 57 is the first work cited within the paper, then the corresponding in-text reference will have the superscript number 57. Similarly, end reference number 1 may not be the first in-text reference to appear within the text.

CSE Style requires that you abbreviate journal titles. Use the NLM Catalog: Journals referenced in the NCBI Databases to identify the official abbreviation for a journal title.
