CSE Citation Style

This guide provides basic instruction about the CSE (Council of Science Educators) Citation Style.

Title & Subtitle

In general, record the words of a title as they appear in the original document.

There are a few exceptions:

  • For books and journal articles, capitalize the first word of a title and any proper nouns, proper adjectives, acronyms, and other initialisms.
  • Romanize titles that appear in a non-Roman alphabet.
  • If a title contains a Greek letter or some other symbol that cannot be reproduced with the type fonts available, substitute the name for the symbol.
  • If a title is given in 2 languages because the text is bilingual, give the English title first, followed by the non-English title in brackets.
  • Treat the names of conferences in titles as proper nouns, applying headline-style capitalization.
  • Consider such items as "final report" or "annual report"  following titles as edition statements, NOT part of the title.
