Components of an CSE reference

1. Author(s)
An author is defined by NISO as "a person, committee, organization, or other party responsible for the creation of the intellectual or artistic content of a work."

2.

Title and Subtitle

  • Give the title and subtitle of a source.
  • Books have one title, journals have two; the title of the article and the title of the Journal
  • The words in the title are to be given in sentence case; capitalize only the first in the title and subtitle

3. Edition
Edition is "a different form or version of  a previously published work. Place edition information after the title. Abbreviate edition to ed.

Content and Medium Designators
This is information on the nature and physical format of a document.

Content designators

  • For journal articles can be editorials. letters to the editor, news
  • For books, forms such as dissertations and bibliographies.
  • For electronic documents, databases, and computer programs

Medium designators--items in nonprint format

  • microfiche or videocassette

A medium designator is a REQUIRED part of a reference; a content designator is OPTIONAL. However it is not necessary to include "Internet" as a medium designator for online resources.
Place the medium designator after the title in brackets.

Place of Publication
Defined as "the name of the city where the publisher is located."

  • For books, this is REQUIRED in the reference.
  • For journals, this information is OMITTED.

Publisher
Defined by NISO as "the person, firm, or corporate body responsible for making a work available (issuing it) to the public."

Date

Date of publication is REQUIRED for all references.

Volume and Issue

  • Both volume and issue are required for references for books and journals if they are present.

Location within a Work and Extent of a Work (Pagination)Volume and Issue

  • Location within a work "indicates the specific point in a publication at which the item being referenced is located, and is a REQUIRED part of a reference. Examples are journal article pages or pages in a book.
  • Extent of a Work--a number that indicates the total physical extent or size of the work--OPTIONAL part of a reference. Many newer types of things being cited such a webpages, lack pagination.
10. Physical Description
This part of a reference describes the physical attributes of a publication, including size, color, the length of a video, number of physical pieces.  This is an OPTIONAL part of a reference.
