CSE Style: Two Kinds of Citations

In-Text citations

CSE Style

In-Text references

In the CSE Style, resources are cited in text with one of three systems.

  • Citation Sequence-- Use numbers in the text to refer to the end references.
    • Example:  There were many plants that did not show this characteristic.(1)
  • Name-Year--The author's name and the year published are in parentheses
    • Example:  There were many plants that did not show this characteristic. (Kessler 2022)
  • Citation-Name--Complete the list of end references for the work and then sequence them alphabetically by author .
    • Example:  There were many plants that did not show this characteristic. (22)

The preferred system in use for science classes taught at Texas Wesleyan University is the Name-Year, so all examples in this guide will be given in this system.

In-Text reference

Format:   Author(s) [surname only] Date.   Example:   Pullman 2022.

Two Authors:  Author and Author Date.    Example:    Pullman and Whitman 2021.

Three or more authors:  Author et al.        Example:   Miles et al. 2020.

References

End-of-paper citations (End References)

Your reference list should appear at the end of your paper. It contains a list of resources that have been cited within the text. The list of end references should appear under a heading called "References", "Cited References", "Literature Cited" or "Bibliography.

  • Reference list entries should be alphabetized by the last name of the first author of each work.
  • For multiple articles by the same author, or authors listed in the same order, list the entries in chronological order, by year of publication, from earliest to most recent. References with no date precede references with dates, and in-press references are listed last.

    • Miles, D.B. (2018).
    • Miles, D.B. (2020a).
    • Miles, D.B. (2020b, April).

  • Present the journal title in full.
