APA Style

Definition of Title: The title is what a work is known by.  Titles fall into two categories:
  • works that stand alone (books, dissertations, reports)
  • works that are a part of a greater whole (periodical articles, edited book chapters)
Where the title is located in the two categories
  • When a work stands alone, the title of that work appears in the title element
  • When a work is a part of a greater whole, the title of the article or book chapter appears in the title element, and the title of the greater whole appears in the source element

Guidelines for the title element
  • Give the title and subtitle of a source.
  • The words in the title are to be given in sentence case; capitalize only the first letter in the first word in the title and subtitle
  • For works that are part of a greater whole, such as a journal article, do not put the title of the article in italics or use quotation marks.
  • For works that are part of a greater whole, such as a journal article, the title of the journal the article is a part of is put in italics, and every major term is capitalized   Journal of Comparative and Physiological Psychology
  • For works that stand alone, such as a book title of the book is italicized, and only the first word is capitalized.   Exploring cognitive development: The child as problem solver
  • Enclose in paratheses after the title any additional information, such as edition, report number or volume number). Do not italicize the additional information  Exploring cognitive development: The child as problem solver (2nd. ed)
  • If a numbered volume has its own title, the volume number and title are included as part of the main title, rather in parentheses

Journal Article

Article in a newspaper

Article in a magazine

What to do if there is no title

Provide the author and date, describe the work in square brackets, and then provide the source.
