This course covers the historical and contemporary crimes against humanity including extermination, torture, persecution, or other inhumane acts against civilians sanctioned or committed by a de facto authority. The course represents not only a strong scholarly approach to studying crimes against humanity, including the conditions associated with acceptance and normalization of said crimes as they are perpetrated, but also provides a moral and ethical barometer for civilized countries and governments. The approach of this course provides students with a historical and apolitical analysis of one of the core crimes of international criminal law joined by genocide, crime of aggression, and war crimes.
