Cultural Humility

Cultural Humility

Like cultural competence, cultural humility was initially proposed in the healthcare field to address inequities, but has since been utilized in various other fields.

Cultural humility is a step beyond cultural competence and includes:

  • commitment to lifelong, critical self-reflection
  • recognition and mitigation of power imbalances
  • accountability to individuals and institutions.

Cultural Competency

Cultural Competence

Cultural competency is the "ability of individuals and systems to respond respectfully and effectively to people of all cultures, classes, races, ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, and faiths or religions in a manner that recognizes, affirms, and values the worth of individuals, families, tribes, and communities, and protects and preserves the dignity of each".  (Child Welfare Information Gateway, 2009)

Cultural competence encompasses:

  • being aware of one’s worldview
  • developing positive attitudes toward cultural differences
  • gaining knowledge of different cultural practices and worldviews
  • developing skills for communication and interaction across cultures
