What are Civil Rights?

Per the U.S. Department of Health and Human Resources, civil rights are personal rights guaranteed and protected by the U.S. Constitution and federal laws enacted by Congress. Civil rights include protection from unlawful discrimination. Classes protected by civil rights are race, color, national origin, disability, age, religion, and sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, and gender identity).

On this page you will find general resources on civil rights, civil rights movements, and books on Indigenous American Civil Rights. Use the drop-down menu to learn more about specific Civil Rights Movements.
