Rare books have different qualities that earn them the designation of "rare" these qualities include:
- printing date/age
- scarcity
- edition
- market value
- unique form and/or function
- physical and aesthetic properties
- association
- subject matter
It is important to note that these qualities are not mutually exclusive. For instance, old books are not necessarily rare and rare books are not necessarily old.
