How can academic librarians foster critical AI literacy in their communities?

A 4-Step Framework to Prepare Learners for a ChatGPT World
1. Problem Formulation--Students define the problem or challenge they want to solve.
2. AI tool selection--Students choose the best generative AI tools to help them with their problem. They learn how to explore, compare, and evaluate different generative AI tools and their features.
3. Interaction---Students use the generative AI tools to solve their problem. They experiment with different inputs and outputs and see how the generative AI tools affect their problem-solving process and outcome.
4. Reflection---Students assess and report their experiences with the generative AI tools.

The ability to 1. understand, 2. use, 3. monitor, and 4. critically reflect on AI applications without necessarily being able to develop AI models themselves is commonly referred to as being “AI literate”

AI literacy is a multifaceted concept that goes beyond a mere understanding of AI technologies. At its core, AI literacy involves the having the skills and competencies required to use AI technologies and applications effectively.

- This video explains “what is AI literacy, why it is important to have it and how to get AI literacy”. It helps you learn Artificial Intelligence within 10 minutes. This video requires 0 knowledge of AI. After the big questions of what and why, it also give you specific instructions on how to get started. 2 options were provided for 1) people without coding background, and 2) people with coding skills or who want to get into coding. The video highlights the importance of your domain knowledge, where you can leverage to solve problems, which AI scientists could solve. Finally the video also talks about the importance of making a fit plan and mindset to be able to succeed.

The University of Maryland’s Teaching and Learning Transformation Center and its University Libraries created a Canvas module on AI and information literacy for instructors to use in their courses.

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) for K-12 initiative (AI4K12) is jointly sponsored by AAAI and CSTA.
The initiative is developing (1) national guidelines for AI education for K-12, (2) an online, curated resource Directory to facilitate AI instruction, and (3) a community of practitioners, researchers, resource and tool developers focused on the AI for K-12 audience. Computers perceive the world using sensors. Perception is the process of extracting meaning from sensory signals. Making computers “see” and “hear” well enough for practical use is one of the most significant achievements of AI to date.

Agents maintain representations of the world and use them for reasoning. Representation is one of the fundamental problems of intelligence, both natural and artificial. Computers construct representations using data structures, and these representations support reasoning algorithms that derive new information from what is already known. While AI agents can reason about very complex problems, they do not think the way a human does.

Computers can learn from data. Machine learning is a kind of statistical inference that finds patterns in data. Many areas of AI have progressed significantly in recent years thanks to learning algorithms that create new representations. For the approach to succeed, tremendous amounts of data are required. This “training data” must usually be supplied by people, but is sometimes acquired by the machine itself.

Thus, it is important to discuss the impacts that AI is having on our society and develop criteria for the ethical design and deployment of AI-based systems.
