Book Display: Starting Over

Every year about this time, displays appear about “New Beginnings” to go along with the start of the school year.  Isn’t each year really starting over?  I happened on to a reading list about “Starting over” and I thought that would be more appropriate for this month’s book display.

In case you don’t know me, my name is Risa (Reference) and I do the book displays across from the Circulation desk.  No, not the new books.  The themed displays at the end.  Some of my past displays have been “Texas Poets” or “Brain Teaser Month” or even “Green Books.”  I love to read so if you do too, feel free to come in and “talk books” with me.

I found this list in Book Riot and it was titled “100 Must-Read Books about Starting Over.”  If you’re interested in more of these books or in what Book Riot is, I have that at the Reference Desk.  The list is a great combination of fiction and memoir.  Some of the books we don’t have so I’ll tell you about some of them. How about Wild by Cheryl Strayed?  What a starting over story that was (complete with a really heavy backpack)!  Then there is Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. I always wondered: did she have to go all the way to Italy and Indonesia just to start over?

There are books in the display that are some of my favorites. A Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion helped me get through the year my husband died and adjust to my new normal.  It’s such a beautiful story of grief and survival.  Anne of Green Gables by LM Montgomery enabled my fifth grade self to embrace my natural enthusiasm with fresh confidence.

Then there are the books I have not gotten to read yet but I want to.  The Leftovers by Tom Perrotta is now an HBO series. A friend of mine talked about how beautiful his writing is.  Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi has been recommended by so many people.  I’m not sure Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead can win any more prizes.

Stop by and look through the “Starting Over” display.  I’ve noticed some books already checked out!
